This was bought for taking to a festival where I would be camping for 1 full week. Now those of us that have been camping before will know that no matter where you set up your tent, you are guaranteed to find a stone, bottlecap, Thor's hammer, and countless other solid immovable objects when you try and push your tent peg in. This year however, I came prepared. I thought to myself, enough is enough. No more half stuck in pegs, no more struggling to shove it in with my boot. I'm buying a mallet. When searching for a mallet, I was totally spoilt for choice. So many different types, it got a little confusing looking through them all. I thought I would maybe take a step up from a wooden mallet, but not go too fancy or upmarket. After all, this was being taken to a festival. I wouldn't wan't other festival goers to become jealous or even go to the point of stealing my new investment. I settled with a simple rubber mallet. I saw this one advertised, and the fact it pointed out it had a steel shaft twice got me interested right away. I mean come on, a shaft made of steel that was so good they decided to mention it twice?! Where could I have gone wrong! Upon further inspection, I noticed it actually listed ALL the features twice. At this point I picked my jaw up from the desk and decided.... this was the mallet for me. The mallet arrived in a timely fashion, along with some other sub-standard camping accessories that were clearly nowhere near as important. I opened the box, and there she was. In a glorious mixture of black rubber and shiny steel, happily sitting at the top of the box sparkling away at me. I couldn't wait to get my hands on that comfort grip handle. I picked it up and had to question if I had actually picked up anything at all. After a quick double take, I realised that I had picked it up, but the 12oz of rubber and steel felt like holding onto a cloud. The comfort grip handle was perfect, the weight was good. I couldn't wait to try this girl out. After weeks of anticipation I literally couldn't wait any more. I went to the lovely festival site in the South West of England a day early I was that excited. I left everything else in my car, all I brought was my tent and my mallet, that I had decided to call Kate. While this seems odd to be giving a girls name to something that is tough and rugged, the soft supple feel of Kate's handle made me realise that we live in a world of gender equality, and people shouldn't have such sexist thoughts. A Kate can do any job just as well as anyone else as long as the effort is put in. I picked a spot, nice and flat with enough space for my fellow campmates to also set up nearby. Tent was all ready to go and I was about to knock my first peg in. I pushed it in a little with my hand to make sure it was steady, grabbed hold of Kate's comfort grip and lifted her into the air until I was in a comfortable position. At this point, I thought to myself... do I really want to do this? Would I really want to ruin such a perfect combination of moulded plastic and shiny steel? But what good would she be if she wasn't fulfilling her purpose in life? With that last thought in my head, down she went. The peg glided into the ground so softly and gently. It was like I was hammering into cotton wool. The tent was up in next to no time. The tent itself lasted the week without problems, but the main thing is that not 1 of those pegs caused me any problems. They all went into the ground perfectly and didn't move one bit until I needed to take my tent down. Only down side, the steel is so shiny it attracted the attention of my friends who asked to borrow Kate. I felt so bad that I allowed her to sleep on my single airbed for the first night while I slept alone outside in the cold. As for my future with Kate, she is currently sat on my desk watching my type this. I plan on having many more trips with her in the future. I even let her into the bed every now and then, if I'm in a good mood of course.

Okay for the price. However the rubber is not very soft, quite brittle chipped on the edge.

It is light and yet strong enough for putting up the tent. I was sing a hammer which bent the metal sticks so I am very happy to use this mallet as it does the job and it is light enough for even a child to use.

The weight is good. The mallet is as described. The handle is loose. There fore the head never makes proper contact with the tent peg, resulting in bent pegs, sore fingers, a tender wrist and an improper temperament!
